Community Hero Spotlight: Bob Graves

Each year Nantucket Bank asks members of the community to nominate local individuals and organizations that have had major impacts on their communities. The top 12 heroes are selected by a committee and featured in the following year’s Community Hero Calendar.

February 2018 Community Hero

Bob Graves honeymooned on Nantucket in 1965, but it was not until he retired from the U.S. Army in 1986 that Nantucket became his full-time home. Bob immediately became involved with the Nantucket Boy Scouts; first as an assistant scout master, then scout master and finally as chairman of the Nantucket District Camp, Camp Richard. Bob lead a team of truly committed “Nantucketers” to save Camp Richard from being demolished by a development. Humble and giving, Bob makes it clear that without the Nantucket Land Council, “a few crafty, talented people” and the generosity of the Nantucket community, Camp Richard would no longer exist.

Each Community Hero is awarded $1,000 toward a charity of their choice. Bob Graves is sending his $1,000 donation from the Blue Hills Bank Foundation to the Nantucket Land Council.

Thank you, Bob, for your dedication to the Nantucket Boy Scouts and the preservation of Camp Richard.
